Archaeologists find top half of giant Ramesses II statue, completing a century-long puzzle

The upper half of a giant statue of the ancient Egyptian pharaoh Ramesses II has been discovered near the ancient city of Hermopolis (modern-day el-Ashmunein), about 155 miles (250 kilometers) south of Cairo. The large stone piece is about 12.5 feet (3.8 meters) tall and depicts Ramesses II (reign circa 1279 to 1213 B.C.) wearing a double crown and a headdress topped with a royal cobra, the Egyptian Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities said in an Arabic language statement . The back of the statue has hieroglyphs that state the various titles of the king. These titles help to glorify Ramesses II, according to the statement. The lower part of the statue was found in 1930 by German archaeologist Günther Roeder. The original statue, when the lower and upper parts were together, would have stood about 23 feet (7 m) tall, the statement said. Archaeologists discover 4,800-year old skeletons of a mother nursing her child     The eternal love of a mother for her child might be a literary hyperbole; but the phrase can now boast a historical context – courtesy of a pair of 4,800 years old skeleton s. To that end, archaeologists have discover ed human remains (over 48 sets) in the Taichung area of central Taiwan, and one of these sets heartrendingly showcases a skeleton of a mother cradling her baby (presumably). And the really poignant part is – the mother seems to look on to her child with her slightly tilted head.   From the historical perspective, the site in question has been called the Ann He Road Ruin in Taichung. A greenish obsidian blade, believed to have been found on the Texas Panhandle, may be from the 16th-century expedition led by the Spanish explorer Francisco Vázquez de Coronado, a new study suggests. The sharp tool's provenance is hazy, but a chemical analysis of the obsidian reveals that it came from the Sierra de Pachuca mountain range of Central Mexico, where many Indigenous people on the expedition got raw materials for cutting tools, the researchers found. It's possible that an Indigenous person traveling with Coronado crafted the blade in Mexico and later discarded it in Texas, which could help determine Coronado's exact route through the Lonestar State, the researchers said. "Although Coronado's exact route through the Texas Panhandle in AD 1541 is uncertain, current understanding suggests that it passed through or close to Mclean," the researchers wrote in the study, published in January in the Journal of the North Texas Archeological Society .
