Aston Villa 1-2 Man Utd: Player ratings as late McTominay header earns vital win

Image
An 86th-minute header from Scott McTominay sealed a hugely impressive win for Manchester United at Villa Park on Sunday. Man Utd went ahead in the first half through the in-form Rasmus Hojlund, before a period of sustained pressure from Villa culminated in Douglas Luiz making it 1-1. Both teams missed decent chances to win the game before McTominay came off of the bench to thump home a stunning clincher. The win sees Man Utd climb to within just six points of the top four places after a run of three wins on the bounce in the Premier League. How the game unfolded Man Utd caused Villa's backline problems early on with both their pace on the break and their high-pressing. The latter almost resulted in an opening goal in the 11th minute when, after winning possession just outside of Villa's box, Bruno Fernandes cleverly slid the ball into the path of Hojlund. After controlling, however, Hojlund saw his effort from inside the area deflect wide of the post. The Danish striker would ...

Man City 3-1 Burnley: Player ratings as Alvarez brace keeps pressure on Liverpool

Image
Manchester City kept the pressure on Liverpool in the developing Premier League title race with a comfortable win over Burnley at the Etihad Stadium on Wednesday night. It was the first time that City legend Vincent Kompany, having seen his Clarets lose the reverse fixture back in August, had taken a team to his former stomping ground. But any chance of a shock result was squashed in the first half alone when Julian Alvarez, doing the Business in Erling Haaland’s absence from the start – although the Norwegian did make his eagerly awaited return from the bench, scored twice in quick succession inside the opening 22 minutes. Rodri put the icing on the cake almost immediately after half-time, with Ameen Al Dakhil pulling one back in stoppage to at least tarnish the champions’ clean sheet. How the game unfolded The hosts dominated proceedings from the first moments, although it was a slow start from them in terms of chance creation, taking time to feel their way around Burnley and sus ou...

Chelsea 1-0 Fulham: Player ratings as Cole Palmer penalty settles west London derby

Image
FROM STAMFORD BRIDGE - Chelsea just about did enough to see off neighbours Fulham in a nervy west London derby on Saturday. A first-half penalty from Cole Palmer was all that separated the two sides on a day where neither really got going in attack. Mauricio Pochettino's men have climbed to eighth in the Premier League table above Manchester United and Newcastle United, who play later this weekend, while Marco Silva's charges remain 13th. How the game unfolded The first real sight of goal came on the 15-minute mark when Conor Gallagher fired over when surrounded by five Fulham bodies on the edge of the penalty area. Chelsea went closer soon after as Enzo Fernandez's pinpoint cross from the left flank was met by Armando Broja, but his header sailed wide of the near post. Fulham went nearly broke the deadlock when Antonee Robinson's low cross travelled all the way through the Chelsea six-yard box and found Harry Wilson, whose first-time strike was denied by the legs of ...

PSG 2-0 Borussia Dortmund: Player ratings as Mbappe & Hakimi goals secure routine win

Image
Paris Saint-Germain produced a dominant performance as they roared to a comfortable 2-0 victory over Borussia Dortmund in their Champions League opener on Tuesday night. A Kylian Mbappe penalty early in the second half got the scoring underway before former Dortmund favourite Achraf Hakimi slotted home a second to put the Game to bed. Luis Enrique's side boasted close to 70% possession on an evening in which they were rarely under threat, cruising to a statement win to begin their European journey. How the game unfolded It was Dortmund who actually had the first opportunity of the Game . Donyell Malen found some space in the box 15 minutes in but couldn't steer his strike away from Gianluigi Donnarumma's welcoming arms. That was about as good as it got for Dortmund as PSG wrestled control of the contest. Randal Kolo Muani mis-hit what should have been an easy goal before Vitinha saw a strike cannon back off the post. Boasting nearly 80% possession as the first half ticked ...
